These adorable chicks probably wont make it. All of the rest of the younglings are just starting to fly. They need to be able to fly by end of August or they wont make it ahead of the snow.

Black Bear
Skilak Lake was full of Black Bears. They are much smaller but much more territorial and feisty. At the same time they are more skittish of humans.
This guy finally came out of the bushes after we sat there quietly in our boat about 100 ft away for a good 15 minutes
Mom’s Protection
It was really stormy seas when I shot this. (Not the best focus but the same wave that got these two knocked me off my feet too!)
The mom saw the wave and then bobbed up as high as she could to shield her pup as much as she could from the wave.

This bear we called pom pom because of his fluffy ears…was a very patient hunter with great concentration. He almost always caught what he was after.
Smells GOOD!
We were parked not far off shore and had just opened a large thermos with stew made by our chef Barbara, when this guy showed up sniffing in our direction.
It was REALLY good stew!
Beautiful Catch…
This red sockeye was so beautiful in it’s spawning red with gold head. You could practically walk around the hole lake on them there were so many.

I shot this in Homer Alaska. There were 9 foot swells, but this last mom and pup found a lil calm spot.
