We met this guy on the trail recently. His person said he’s a wonderful critter in every way but he was unhappy being separated from all his buddy horses. He had a lot to say about it.

Western Serviceberry
Serviceberries are in bloom now and they’re gorgeous. They’re a native tree, also known as Saskatoon. In the summer these blossoms become small, dark edible berries.
Bushes all over the Dungeness Recreation area are covered with blossoms. Pretty wonderful.
Open at last
Old Olympic Highway closed last July for rebuilding of the narrow old bridge over McDonald Creek. After some weather delays the new span is open. The work was completed on budget and it looks nice. It’s wider and the road has lost its former deep dip. It sure is great to have this convenient route back.

Sweet Spot
You can get ice cream in Sequim, sort of. But there wasn’t a dedicated venue, at least not one I’d ever found. Until Sweet Spot opened last week, though it isn’t ice cream. It’s frozen yogurt. Even better. More calcium. Less butter fat. Or so I’m told.
Enter this colorful space. Take a cup. Choose your yogurt and fill the cup. Add toppings. Weigh and pay. In the middle of the afternoon yesterday there were about a dozen of us there. I guess the word’s out.
There’s a place like this in Silverdale, an hour away, so I though I was safe from temptation. This one is in the Sequim J.C. Penney shopping center. Sunny Farms Supplements on one side, Strong Points Fitness on the other. No doubt about it. I’m doomed.
Rufous hummingbird
Right now is the season for hummingbirds. We saw at least six on a walk the other day. Perched, chasing each other, or flying in big, showy mating swoops they’re beautiful to watch. Catching them still is another matter entirely.
This one flashed its iridescent red feathers as it looked from side to side. The color is stunning and as hard to catch as a hummer sitting still.
Guilty pleasure
A place named Extraordinary Desserts was within close walking distance of our lodgings in San Diego a while back. Its name was on a Google map. As a diligent travel researcher I felt it my responsibility to check it out. If there’s such a thing as food porn, this is it. Click the link above. It’s as good as it looks.
