Views of Sequim, the Olympic Peninsula. . .and beyond
The Asiatic poppies in our yard are blooming again. I’d noticed that there were a few colors besides the standard red but was amazed by the colors at the center of this white one.
Pink is a more common variant and most lighter poppies have these yellow centers.
The classic red poppies have slightly darker centers. This is another variant.
As always, the wind came up as I photographed. Most of our poppies are bright red like these.
Can you tell I haven’t done anything in my garden lately? My inattention is painfully evident now that spring has awakened the weeds. My work is cut out before I get this year’s garden started.
We get a lot of deer visiting our house but it’s usually does and fawns. I’ve counted up to nine wandering through lately. This young buck is uncommon. They usually keep a low profile and don’t hang out with the ladies.
I showed you last week what remained of the leaves on my bean plant. I can’t imagine what I expected, but I didn’t expect this a week later. Do you see any leaves left? This photo was taken from the same spot eight days after the one below.
This is downright pathetic.
I can’t take credit for the sweet peas growing in my garden. A few hearty plants are blossoming despite our wet September.
We were traveling this past May during the peak time for getting a garden going. Days count when there’s a short growing season and my bean plant is just coming into its own these days, on the cusp of season ending nighttime frost.
It’s bad enough to fight the calendar. Now throw in some pest that is methodically stripping the plant of all the leaves it can get its nasty little biting parts on.
Don’t let the beans in this shot fool you. The little varmints have gotten most of them, too. And I won’t bore you with my sorry squash tales. This year’s garden has been a bust.
We had beautiful poppies this year. They’re gone now. So are the songbirds. That was fast.
