You're not from around here, stranger

Spoiler alert: This was not taken in Sequim.

I love the desert in spring, which makes a quick visit to family in Arizona a double pleasure. I have many happy memories of spring wildflowers. This one, on a purple beavertail cactus, greeted me at the Phoenix airport. I had to post it since I consider cactus blossoms a special treat.

Treebeard's cousins

These faces make me smile every time I see them. They remind me of my father-in-law, a carver who often coaxed beauty from simple pieces of wood. Last week I decided to slow down and get closer to these pieces of road art. There were faces on both sides of the two stumps. They’ve been there a while and seem to have only improved with age. Aren’t they wonderful faces?

Windbreak

If you look at Sequim on a regional map you can see that the landform bulges out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, particularly in the northern Dungeness area. At times this maritime influence delivers the brunt of high winds.

Planted windbreaks like these are somewhat common around here. This is another view of the lombardi poplar “four seasons trees” that I posted here recently. These trees seem to hold up well against the wind. Others have the look of artistic topiary as they grow bent from the sometimes brutal westerly winds.
