A trip down memory lane

We recently visited the Gere-A-Deli in Annacortes and in addition to a delicious lunch they served up a big side of nostalgia. He peaked before I was old enough to follow him (really!) but Hopalong Cassidy was a huge cultural icon, first through books, then via movies in the 1930s and 1940s. By the early 1950s Hopalong was on television and became an early branding franchise as his image was the first produced on children’s lunchboxes and 100 companies eventually producing products with his image. (I do remember Butternut bread.)

I don’t remember either of these brands; the big size of the cans makes me wonder if they were for restaurant use. But around our house we often had tins from various purchases or gifts that had second lives holding collections of sewing bits, nuts and bolts, small toys and the like. Tomorrow we’ll head back to Gere-A-Deli for a couple more – uhm, am I really that old? – artifacts.

The Tulip Buffet

During the Sequim Lavender Weekend we have everything from lavender lemonade to lavender ice cream. But we arrived too late for the Tulip Buffet. After taking in all things tulips, we were curious about the tulip buffet. Tulip salad? Tulip casserole? Tulip burger and tulip fries? Or perhaps tulip tiramasu? Maybe next year.

Sequim Food Bank

The Sequim Food Bank is located at 144 West Alder Street. It’s open on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Today is the first of the month, Theme Day with City Daily Photo. March’s theme is “Cafe Chairs.” I’ve not been haunting cafes much these days. (For health reasons I’m on a strict self-imposed diet.) Click here to see blogger interpretations of this theme at City Daily Photo. There are some great shots!

Fishing for mail

This eye-catching mailbox lives at the new Black Bear Restaurant in Sequim. Black Bears are locally owned franchises and the ones I’ve been to in California and now here all have large carved bears adorning their landscape. The bears here are fresh, cute, and nicely executed.

Here’s a closeup of the fishing bruin. The knot in his cheek is a nice touch.

Today is Saturday and the bear can expect a mail delivery today. This may change by fall if the Postal Service gets its way. I saw a recent poll and it seems people on the Olympic Peninsula don’t seem to mind losing their Saturday delivery. Parcels will still come. I guess it’s no big disappointment if the bills don’t arrive until Monday.

What I wanted. . .what I had

We often stop at Murchie’s on Government Street in Victoria. It’s an unassuming bakery – tea shop – cafe that suits us fine when we’re ready to take a break. The cakes above were some of the treats on offer. . .what I wanted.

Here’s what we had, French macaroons and coffee, just what you’d expect to have in a Canadian tea shop. It didn’t disappoint.
