I was surprised to see these roses in bloom at Dungeness Recreation Area the other day. We’ve got acres of bushes that haven’t blossomed yet. These are early.

Sunny Farms
I’ve learned not to wait when it’s time for a garden. Last year I didn’t get to it until late May and Sunny Farms Nursery had almost nothing left.
I started early this year. But as I’ve completed each phase of planting I’ve gone back for more. And each time there’s much less choice than before. Yesterday I was glad I only wanted flowers because the many options I had a couple of weeks ago are gone. Our warmer weather has been a real inspiration for anyone who wants dirt under their nails. There are many of us.
You’re getting today’s shot because I loved looking up from the flowers to see the Olympic Mountains in the distance.
Western Serviceberry
Serviceberries are in bloom now and they’re gorgeous. They’re a native tree, also known as Saskatoon. In the summer these blossoms become small, dark edible berries.
Bushes all over the Dungeness Recreation area are covered with blossoms. Pretty wonderful.
Rhodies
Sometimes I think bees have the right idea, flying into the middle of flowers like this and bathing themselves in pollen.
Theme Day: Laugh
With a nod to Ralph Waldo Emerson: Earth laughs in flowers.

Flower and fruit
Here’s an example where you can see blossoms and fruit-to-be in a single frame. As best I can tell this is salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis), one of the earliest fruiting berries you can find around here. They’re described as a “mushy raspberry” and considered edible. Some people consider them “insipid”; others, “one of the best.” I don’t come across them often enough to have an opinion.
Golden poppy
First of the season.
