Another one down

Two of us have big birthdays within four days of each other. Our younger friend took us out to lunch at AlderWood Bistro for an indulgence in deliciousness. That little cup of soup was a bell ringer, described as corn with mussels, a restrained, fabulous combination of both. And perfectly cooked, crunchy calamari on a citrus dressed salad. A heavenly meal I’m still dreaming about.

Happy birthday to me. I think I’ll celebrate for a few days.

Harvest season

You can get a lot of pumpkins around here these days. But if you want something a little different Sunny Farms is the place to go. They have a great display of all colors and shapes.

These are described as a “red warty thing” and “it’s a squash.”

There are large and small variations, orange, white, you name it.

And if you want something a little spooky, in my opinion these are just the ticket.

Cake talk

I was at our local Costco recently. I obviously wasn’t very focused because I found myself looking at a rack of sheet cakes waiting to be picked up. Happy Anniversary. Happy Birthday. Really. Sometimes I think I’ll read anything.

My radar must have been working because I came across a cake with this written on it: “Thanks for not firing us…yet.” There’s a story there.

Doc Frick’s

If there is a story that goes with this old trailer I don’t know what it is. It says “Doc Frick’s Patented Medicine Show.” There was a Frick’s Drug store in Sequim for 52 years. It closed in 2014 after the owners retired. I don’t know whether the venture had an early incarnation or if this unit was a unique form of advertising. For now, the enigma is parked in a distant field.

Total loss

Two weeks ago today, September 16, the Cedars at Dungeness golf course started its day with a devastating fire. This building, located on a hillside at the east side of the property, went up in flames. The building is described as a workshop and storage building. Nobody was hurt but the loss was considerable.

The building was used for golf cart storage and an estimated 50 carts were lost in the blaze. This included rental carts, two beverage carts, and a number of personal carts. As you can see, it was a total loss. The course has been able to borrow carts from two other local golf courses and rent from a third. The equipment lost was insured but this is a tough time to lose so much equipment as September is a busy month.

Port Book and News

Port Book and News in Port Angeles is one of the local stops on a book lover’s circuit. They sell both new and used books and have a robust selection of periodicals. After combing library book sales — another great resource for readers — I managed to find two more Michael Connelly books to fill out my obsessive growing library of Bosch mysteries.

The Clark barn

I’ve shown the Clark barn, above, before but always at a distance. Here it is, up close and enormous. The Clark Farm is the oldest continuously operated family farm in the state of Washington, originally settled in 1853.

Not far from the barn is Clark’s Chambers Bed and Breakfast, located in the updated old family house. Four bedrooms on the second floor offer beautiful views of the Olympic Mountains, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Mt. Baker and the Cascades. We enjoyed staying here a couple of times before we permanently moved to Sequim.
