The dead barn

Barn collapse 1

I first posted the shot above in September 2012. By December 2012 more of the roof had collapsed and it wasn’t looking good.

Dead barn

For a long time, driving onto the freeway below the hilltop where this barn has stood, it was possible to see the remaining structure. A while back I realized I hadn’t seen it for a while. I drove to where I now know it stood and took the shot above. Not much left standing now. I’m truly sorry to see it go.

Barn envy

Barn envy

I showed you this barn last March while it was under construction. I thought I’d show you an “after” picture since it has inspired me to a hefty dose of barn envy. As you can see, it’s big (oh, think of all the stuff you can do in there!). It has a nice room facing out with a southern exposure (it’s probably a tack room, but I’m thinking studio/sitting & reading room/perhaps guest quarters). There are solar panels. And probably my favorite is what looks like a winged brass pig weather vein on top. I’ll have to go back in better weather and get a closer view of that.

I don’t think the horses have moved in yet. At this point my imagination has certainly beaten them to it.

This old barn

Old Olympic barn 2

If I’m not mistaken, this is one of the older barns in this area. It doesn’t look that way. Like any building – especially one that sees much use and wear – it has needed care and maintenance. That it is standing and looks darned good is a testament to the stewardship of the farmers who have owned it.

Old Olympic barn

It’s one of those barns that deserves perfect light on a perfect day for a just right shot. Others have gotten photos of it just so. I hope I will too one of these days.

Under construction

This is a big day for Sequim Daily Photo. Today we push the button to switch this blog to a new server. Until the process is complete there won’t be any new posting. This may be from 24 to 72 hours. There will be a somewhat different look for SDP when it premiers at the new server, with a responsive, user-friendly format. And in the background, my electronic angel and blog salvation, Denton, will put the finishing touches on transferring nearly eight years of blog history. I don’t exaggerate when I say this never could have happened without Denton, a volunteer of the finest and kindest caliber. Now…I keep my fingers crossed until we meet again. TTFN.
