Views of Sequim, the Olympic Peninsula. . .and beyond
These two goats are residents at Five Acre School. They are friendly and, I suspect, a little lonely as they wait for children to come back to school again and give them snacks. The school is located next to the Dungeness Recreation Area and students are often taken out onto the trails as part of their school day. We’ve also seen children getting horseback riding lessons and there’s a talented marimba band that performs publicly. Makes my old grammar school seem very dull by comparison.
We’ve had some much-welcomed good weather lately and children were out enjoying the play equipment at Carrie Blake Park. There’s also a skate board park nearby with slopes and crests to challenge skate boarders and bicyclists.
Graysmarsh Farms has u-pick berries that start with strawberries that ripen in June. Then come raspberries, loganberries, and boysenberries. Summer ends with blueberries and blackberries. Bring a container, have it weighed, then head into the fields. On a clear day there’s a wonderful view of the Olympics and most any time it’s a delightful spot to pick luscious fresh berries as you dream of preserves or pies or other yummies. And don’t forget the lavender!

The historic Dungeness Schoolhouse is getting a fresh coat of paint as a result of fundraising efforts by the local Museum & Arts Center (MAC). It’s one of the only remaining examples of early schools in this region that is still in use and we’re lucky to have an organization that is acting as its steward. The MAC hosts a very interesting and popular series of local history classes here each winter.
The Sequim Rotary recently hosted its 43rd annual Salmon Bake and Barbeque. The wild Alaska salmon is baked in an open pit over alder. If you like salmon it’s a real treat and they make sure no one leaves hungry. Don’t care for salmon? There are also pulled pork sandwiches. The Rotary hosts the event to raise funds to benefit the local Boys & Girls Club as well as scholarships, a free health clinic, and a variety of other charitable projects.
The new Grocery Outlet store has opened, although the official “Grand Opening” is today. They’re advertising free coffee and treats, face painting and caricature portraits, ice cream floats, balloon twisting, and a variety of drawings for prizes. The newness hasn’t worn off yet for its next door neighbor, Ross Dress for Less, which opened just a few weeks ago.
