Colleen,
the duck is a female Northern Shoveler, easily recognized by its oversized spatulate bill. A fairly common duck in these parts.
Thanks Gary..I loved photographing shovelers (in upright positions!) Didn’t see his break from that position…
I got the Merlin app from Cornell… Have really been enjoying it.
Thanks as always for your help.
Colleen,
just be aware with the Merlin app: It frequently mis-identifies birds in recording the bird sounds. ALWAYS back up Merlin’s ID with a visual or photograph of the subject bird. We are seeing a large number of “uncommon” or “rare” bird ID’s reported, identified only by sound with Merlin. People tend to rely upon the app’s ID, saying “identified by Merlin” in their eBird Checklists and calling it good.
Good to know. I went to the Audubon training at the River Center on learning bird calls of the area, and they recommended the app.
it is a good app. You just can’t blindly rely on the song ID’s especially when it identifies uncommon or rare birds. Don’t believe it without a visual on the actual bird to verify.
