Serviceberries are in bloom now and they’re gorgeous. They’re a native tree, also known as Saskatoon. In the summer these blossoms become small, dark edible berries.
Bushes all over the Dungeness Recreation area are covered with blossoms. Pretty wonderful.
I’ve never heard of these. But I’ll take your word for how good they are. Are they like blueberries and can you go pick them in the Dungeness Recreation area?
They look a little like blueberries and I haven’t seen anything warning us away from picking. It’s probably not a big issue, in any case. Depending on the tree the fruit can be sort of okay or mealy, seedy and tasteless. They’re high in antioxidants and some trees have better growing conditions than others. Birds enjoy them.
It’s lovely in blossom.
Such pretty flowers. Does anyone venture out to pick the berries in summer Kay?
We have run into an Eastern European family happily picking, quite certain that they were wild blueberries (they’re not) and a Native American woman who uses them for a variety of dishes. And our next door neighbor.
They look very pretty and the mountains are gorgeous to see.
Hi Kay, in response to your question: Each of the downtowns have movie theaters…this is probably the most ornate on the outside but they are all quite beautiful on the inside with large open areas, plush carpeting, beautiful cafes/delis, places to sit and chat…The people who put The Villages together knew what they were /are doing. But the entire project has become so large and goes on now for miles and miles that it’s difficult to comprehend. We love to go visit but when we leave it’s like moving from a dream back into reality. You cannot comprehend the number of golf cars zooming back and forth on the many roads made just for golf cars and in the various villages, the golf cars are in the streets. It is, truly, a golf car community. I always try to stay off the main streets when we visit any of the villages and their downtowns which is easy to do as every downtown provides ample parking. It’s really a fantastic experience. We drove by a place we almost bought a few years ago just off the Spanish Springs downtown. I rather wish we had bought it, but another problem is the monthly fees – they are high which is necessary to pay for all the beauty – just the landscaping must run into the millions every month. As I recall, we would have had to pay over $600 monthly and and that was about 10 years ago. It’s probably 30 miles from our house to Spanish Springs and from there to Brownwood is another 30 miles, I think. And they’re still building thousands of homes every month. So The Villages is becoming a force unto itself and is mostly inhabited by right-wing, white, Repubnicans who think Trump was sent by God to cure our messed up country. It’s fun to visit but I don’t want to live there.
Nope. This is a completely unknown tree to this east coast guy. But, I like it.
