Them again

More than once now I’ve heard a nearby ruckus when I’ve been outside. It all came together when I saw this flock of guinea fowl flittering back and forth in our back yard.

These nutty birds visited us some months back. I was certain they wouldn’t survive the neighborhood coyotes but by some miracle they’re still here. I call it a miracle because in my limited experience with poultry these are among the dumbest and flightiest feathered animals I’ve yet to see. (Notice head to body size ratio.) But there are a dozen of these fowl wandering the neighborhood now.

Don’t take my word for where they belong in an avian pecking order. Click here if you want first hand testimony.

  1. In my mind being able to survive the winter months on their own makes them smarter than what people give them credit for.

  2. I’ll take your word for it. Are they good to eat? If so, why did you not catch them and put ’em in a pot? After de-feathering them of course, which I think is called “plucking.” Pluck and eat. I think KFC should change their name to P&E.

  3. My daughter had a small flock of guinea fowl on her South African farmette. I admit to thinking they were innocuous but fun to have around. You got something against dumb birds?
