Somethin’ fishy

Flying fish 2

Salmon are running again in the local rivers and Tuesday we headed to the Dungeness River to take a look. Because water levels are low there’s been concern that the runs may be affected but a couple of small storms lately have helped some.

I caught this critter mid-leap. The focus isn’t ideal but I love the reflection.

Fish splash

I also liked the splash it left behind.

Swimmers

Salmon are anadromous fish. They begin their lives in fresh water rivers, migrate into the ocean, and then return to their birth waters to spawn and die. Here you see migrating salmon swimming past the carcass of one which has finished its journey. Click here for more information about salmon life cycles.

  1. Thanks for the reminder. The salmon should also be swimming up the rivers here. These salmon have never been in salt water. They spend most of their lives in Lake Ontario. In the 1800’s they were kill off with mill dams obstructing their breeding routes. With the dams no loner in place.restocking programs have been successful.

  2. How can one NOT be in awe of nature? This cycle has always fascinated me, along with butterfly migration, bird migration, and so many more that involve animals and inbred instincts.

  3. what a cool moment to capture. we see fish doing this all the time. i always wonder are they just wanting a different view or air? or? way cool. ( :

  4. I don’t know much about salmon except they are exceptional fish when it comes to eating them. This is a very interesting and well-done post.

  5. Re your question/comment on Ocala: Cody’s is a ‘created’ place, much like Disney. So, the buildings you see are at the most 30-35 years old. The Cody’s in Brownwood is about a year old. It’s a make-believe land for adults! 🙂

  6. Great shot of the fist and its shadow – and even better one of the splash. Love the details you captured. You have to get it at the right second or it is gone.
