Last May I posted a picture of blackberry blossoms here. Here are some blackberries as they become the finished product. The local native blackberries are smaller than these but most berry pickers aren’t going to quibble when they find a vine full of ripe blackberries.
Need guidance on what to pick? The black ones. And if you have to yank to get it off the vine you’re picking too soon. Should you forget to watch for thorns the plant will promptly remind you.
Thanks for the picking tips.
What a difference from the delicate blossoms you posted last May and this photo of the harvest when the berries mature. Nature will always awe me. Your plans for the berries?
The black ones sure do look tasty!
They certainly are pretty.
Raspberries are flooding our backyard now.
And, hustle. The birds and bears will be there soon to have dessert.
We take clippers with us when blackberry picking – the vines grow out long shoots to protect the plants and it is a lot easier to pick when those shoots are clipped off. We adore blackberries – our daughter is picking them for us this year. They are smaller because of the dry summer – but still tasty. Seems each year that we’ve lived here the berries have gotten smaller and smaller. The first few years they were 2 or 3 times as big as they are now – makes picking go a lot faster. Mmmmmm blackberry pie – and jam – and cobbler – and just eaten fresh off the bush.
