There’s a small, open structure off the main road into Carrie Blake Park. Inside it is a bronze bust of Sequim’s claim to Olympic fame. Native son Matt Dryke claimed a gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Dryke has bragging rights as an International Skeet Shooting Champion and world record holder.
Here’s the enclosure.
Judging by letters to the editor in the local paper there are plenty of strong feelings on both sides of gun control. I guess it reminded me that I wanted to have a shot of Matt, a sport shooter. A camera is my weapon of choice. I’ll leave the debate to others with the hope that cool, sane heads will prevail.
Skeet shooting is a very specialized sport and takes great eye-hand coordination. That’s what I’ve been told. I’ve never done it. Kudos to Matt.
There are very few “sane heads” when it comes to gun control. The NRA has basically framed the discussion for years, in collusion with the gun companies. I say that as a gun owner and someone who enjoys shooting at paper targets.
But I’m pretty much in your boat and shoot a camera exclusively these days. Heck, half the time I can’t even get that aimed properly!
A camera is my “weapon” of choose as well. My friends and family would attest to that as well.
That’s so nice there’s a bust and an area which honors Matt. As for gun control, I’m not going to wade into the weeds on that one!
That’s a very cool structure. I’m glad we don’t need gun control is this part of the world. Actually, I don’t know anyone who has a weapon.
Enjoyed these photos. As for the gun issue, I’m on the ‘fence’ with this volatile subject. Loved the ‘mole’ post!
Good photo of the sculpture! Every town needs an athlete that gives them bragging rights, esp now since some athletes and their personal lives are nothing to brag about!
