I didn’t count them but I recall being told there were 74 stairs up to the light room at the New Dungeness Lighthouse. The Lighthouse sees about 5,000 visitors per year, many of whom walk ten miles roundtrip on the Dungeness Spit to get there. Two visitors who came during our stint ran the last mile and several were into their 60s and 70s. It helps renew my faith in the fitness of U.S. citizens.
This open ladder is the final ascent into the light room of the Station.
Tomorrow we’ll look at the Keeper’s Quarters.
Gorgeous photos. They could easily be shown at a modern art museum.
Terrific photos of the various steps. Especially love the spiral staircase which is often a little tricky to photograph well.
Really interesting photo!! You really captured the spiral staircase.
Thank you! Volunteer lightkeepers sweep the lighthouse, top to bottom. My husband did it one of our last days there and said he followed a piece of red sweater fuzz from top to bottom. The colors in the stairwell heighten your color sense. I loved the way the yellow glowed on the treads.
Really great shots…..we know they are steps but it would be a great “what is this?” to someone not in the know. Amazing the amount of visitors per year and the fact that 60s & 70s is not too old!
